Field Trips
Midlothian Public Library welcomes field trips by school, day care, and other educational groups, under the terms and conditions of our Field Trip Policy. Field trip options include:
1. Private, Library-Facilitated Visits
To allow the library adequate preparation time, all visit requests must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the educator’s preferred date(s). Library staff will confirm the date and time of the visit at least one week in advance. All visits are subject to the availability of library staff and resources.
Library staff will work with educators to plan an experience appropriate to the group’s age level and educational goals. Library visits typically include a 30-minute presentation by staff, which may cover:
- Staff introductions
- Overview of library services and resources (with handouts)
- Tour of the library
- Review of general library guidelines
- Simple craft or storytime
- Free time to explore the children's and/or teen collections
Other activities or topics may be considered at the educator’s request. Educators who wish to incorporate library card registration into their visit must have a conversation about procedures with a library staff member at the time they schedule the visit.
2. Walk-In Use of the Public Space
Educational groups are welcome to visit the Library’s public spaces any time the Library is open. However, staff will not be available to provide tours, presentations, or special programming unless scheduled in advance (see above), and groups must provide adequate adult supervision for the youth in their care. The library's Meeting Room is not available for walk-in use.
3. Participation in Scheduled Library-Sponsored Events
Educational groups are welcome to participate in library-hosted events, provided that educators register their group by phone no later than 5 days prior to the event. Groups may be denied registration if their number would cause the event to exceed its registration capacity.
Educator Cards
Midlothian Public Library has an agreement with Midlothian School District 143 to allow administrators, faculty, and paraprofessionals in the district to obtain an educator library card. For details, see our Educator Cards Information.
