COVID-19 Closure Resources

In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Midlothian Public Library is closed until further notice. We will do our best to make our resources available to you remotely during these unusual and uncertain times.

Because circumstances change quickly and you may have missed communications from us, we’ve started this web page to compile all details you may need to use the library remotely. Please check back frequently for updates.

Physical Materials

Due dates on physical materials have been extended through June 3. We will not be charging or billing for overdue fines during our closure.

Please do not return physical materials to our book drop. It is locked to prevent overflow. Please hold your materials at home until we reopen.

eBooks & eResources

Above, click DIGITAL LIBRARY and E-MEDIA for a variety of eBooks and other resources available from the library. All are free, but some require a library card and/or PIN number, and some require a password. Please click the name of the resource for how to login. Those that require passwords will have the password on the resource page.

Library Cards

We have put in place the following provisions to ensure the largest number of residents possible have active library cards for the use of online resources:

Online signup for digital library card: Residents of Midlothian can sign up for a free online library card for digital resources only, effective for 90 days. Once we reopen, you can come into the library to convert this into a full-service library card to check out physical materials. Click HERE to get started.

No expiration dates: All current library cards will no longer expire, and library cards that have expired since January 1, 2017 have been made active again with no expiration date. If your card expired prior to January 1, 2017, your card is no longer in our system. Please use the instructions above to sign up for a new digital card.

Unblocked cards: If your library card use was blocked because you owed $10 or more in fines or lost/damaged materials charges, we have temporarily raised our block limit to $100.

Resetting Your PIN

If you don’t know or don’t remember your PIN, do this:

  1. Visit our online catalog at: https://catalog.swanlibraries.net/client/en_US/mds
  2. Click "Log In" at the top-right, and "Forgot my PIN" on the login screen
  3. A follow-up will be sent directly to your email enabling you to re-set it

Internet Access

During our closure, free WiFi will be accessible from the library parking lot. To comply with the social distancing requirements of our Governor’s Executive Order, we are requiring that WiFi users do so from
inside vehicles only. We are grateful to the Midlothian Police Department for their assistance in patrolling our parking lot when we are closed. If they report to us that individuals are not following this directive to remain in their cars, we may be forced to turn off the WiFi for the sake of public safety.

In addition, it has come to our attention that Comcast is making 60 days of free Internet Essentials service available to low income families. For more information, please call 1-855-846-8376 (English) and 1-855-765-6995 (Spanish).

Social Media

While we are closed, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We will be sharing opportunities for fun and educational online experiences presented by authors and nonprofit organizations, as well as other information useful to the public.

Programming

During our closure, library staff are working hard to present several program series for a variety of different age groups on a variety of different online platforms. See our online calendar of events for our current offerings; click the name of the program for what to expect and how to join.
